The City of White Rock is located in the southern section of Metro Vancouver, which is located in the southwestern region of British Columbia. White Rock is bordered by Semiahmoo Bay and South Surrey to the west, South Surrey to the north and east, and Semiahmoo Bay to the south. White Rock was incorporated in 1957, has a geographic area of approximately 5.28 square kilometres, and a 2006 census population estimated at 18,755. The city is primarily residential in nature, with commercial/retail development concentrated primarily along north‐south running Johnston Road, east‐west running North Bluff Road and east‐west running Marine Drive at the waterfront. The major transportation corridors through the city are the above mentioned streets, with Highway 99 also located within 1 kilometre to the north‐east, and connects the communities of Metro Vancouver to Washington State at the US border.
Much of the shoreline along Semiahmoo Bay is residential in nature, however the direct waterfront is occupied by a single‐track main line of the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway. As the geography of White Rock rises up from the waterfront at the south towards North Bluff Road to the north, many properties offer highly desirable views towards Semiahmoo Bay and the Semiahmoo Peninsula.
