Local Community Profile

The City of North Vancouver is located in the northern section of Metro Vancouver, which is located in the southwestern region of British Columbia. The City of North Vancouver is bordered by the District of North Vancouver to the west, north and east, and by Burrard Inlet to the south. The “city” was incorporated in 1907, and although surrounded on three sides by the “district”, the City of North Vancouver has a higher density urban character. With a geographic area of 11.95 square kilometres and a 2006 population estimated over 45,100, the city is home to significant low, mid, and high‐rise residential development. Commercial/retail development is primarily located along the Lonsdale corridor, with terminates at the waterfront with the regionally popular Lonsdale Quay. The major transportation corridor through the city is the Trans‐Canada Highway, which connects the communities of the Sea to Sky Corridor, the Fraser Valley, Metro Vancouver, and routes into the interior of British Columbia.

The District of North Vancouver is geographically much larger than the city, with an area of approximately 512.9 square kilometres. The district is bordered by the Capilano River/District of West Vancouver to the west, Burrard Inlet and the City of North Vancouver to the South, Indian Arm to the east, and the Coast Mountains to the north. The population of the district is estimated to be 82,562 (2006), with a lower density of residential development overall than the City of North Vancouver. Much of the shoreline along Burrard Inlet is industrial in nature, however as North Vancouver rises from the waterfront towards the Coast Mountains, many properties offer desirable views towards the City of Vancouver to the south.
