The District of Mission is located in the northwestern region of the Fraser Valley Regional District, due east of Metro Vancouver, which itself is located in the southwest section of British Columbia. Mission was originally incorporated in 1892, and was amalgamated into the District of Mission in 1969. It is bordered to the west by the District of Maple Ridge, to the south by the Fraser River, and to the east by the unincorporated communities of Hatzic and Dewdney. The District of Mission has a geographic area of approximately 225 square kilometres with a population of approximately 34,500 (2006).
The majority of Mission geographically remains forested, with the southern portion of the District west of Hatzic Lake being the most densely inhabited. A high percentage of Mission residents commute to work in other municipalities, as Mission has a relatively low employment base versus its population. The major resource sectors in Mission are Hydro ‐Electricity, forestry, and agriculture. The largest employers in the District are the Mission school district and the local municipal government. The major transportation corridors through Mission include Highway 7 which connects Maple Ridge to the west and Hatzic to the east, and the Mission Bridge (Highway 11) which connects Mission to Abbotsford over the Fraser River.
